As the days get shorter, more of us arrive and leave in the dark. Most parking trips are uneventful, but a few habits make evening parking safer and less stressful.
Choose your spot on the way in
Park where you will be comfortable returning later: near entrances, elevators or stairwells, and under lights. A spot that feels fine at 4 p.m. may feel very different at 8 p.m.
Note your location
Snap a photo of the level, row or nearest sign. Wandering a garage at night looking for your car is exactly what you want to avoid.
Keep valuables out of sight
Put bags and electronics in the trunk before you arrive, not after you park, so no one watching sees where they went.
Walk with purpose
Have your keys or phone ready before you reach the car. Stay aware of your surroundings and save the phone call or text until you are inside with the doors locked.
Use the help that is there
Many staffed garages offer security escorts, and attendants generally know their facility well. If something feels off, go back toward people and lights and ask for help.
None of this is about fear. It is about setting yourself up so the end of a long day is easy.
